Carl Wayne Johnson, 62 of E. C. Street., Kannapolis, NC, passed away Sunday, April 16, 2017, at W.G. Bill Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury, NC.
He was born June 24, 1954 in Cabarrus County to Mary Louise Johnson Black and the late Banks Junior Black .
Carl was educated in the Kannapolis City School and was a 1972 graduate of G.W. Carver/A.L. Brown High School. He was also a graduate of NC Central University where he majored in Political Science and was in Navy ROTC for 2 years.
Carl was a member of the 82nd Airborne with 91 Jumps and joined the National Guard as an Army Engineer. He was a Shriner and Mason of King Hezekiah #224. Carl was formerly employed at the Gatlin Youth Center with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Department until his retirement.
Services will be held Sunday, April 23, 2017 at Marable Memorial AME Zion Church, 400 Huron St., Kannapolis, NC. Visitation will be 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM with funeral services at 3:00 PM. Burial will be at National Cemetery on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at 10:00 AM.
In addition to his father he was preceded in death by his son, Carlos Johnson and a sister in-law, Deloris Black.
Those left to cherish fond memories include his mother, Mary Louise Johnson Black of Kannapolis, two step-children, T. Bug Webb of Concord and Candice Johnson of Kannapolis; two brothers, Darrell Black (Geraldine) and Michael Black both of Kannapolis; one uncle, Tim Johnson (Mary) of Washington, DC; one nephew, Darrell Witherspoon of Concord and a host of nieces, cousins, and friends.
