Ruth Aurelia (McIlwain) CurryApril 7, 1931 ~ November 16, 2017 (age 86)
Ruth Aurelia McIlwain Curry, 86, of Waco Ave, passed away Thursday, November 16, at the Tucker Hospice House.
She was born April 7, 1931 in Gaston County to the late Robert V. McIlwain and the late Hattie Cora Lee Johnson McIlwain.
Ruth was a graduate of G.W. Carver High School, Barber-Scotia College and UNC-Charlotte. She retired from the Kannapolis City Schools after 31 years of service. Ruth was a former member of Marable Memorial AME Zion Church where she served in many capacities; and currently a member of Bethel AME Zion Church where she was the Assistant Superintendent of Sunday School. Ruth was active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Lambda Upsilon Omega Chapter, where she served on local, regional and national committees.
Services will be held on Tuesday, November 21 at Bethel AME Zion Church. Visitation will be 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM with funeral services at 12:00. Burial will follow in the Curry Family Cemetery.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony John (AJ) Curry; her siblings, Katherine Hampton, John Lee McIlwain, Mable M. Cannon, Doretha M. Thompson and Robert V. McIlwain, Jr.
Those left to cherish fond memories include a daughter, Natalie Curry of the home; two sons, Anthony B. Curry of Kannapolis, Gregory Curry (Sylvia) of Ramona CA; two grandchildren, Anthony J. Curry and Tracie Curry; special nieces, Iris McIlwain, Pamela Phifer, Patricia Reid, Connie Davis, Charlene Connor and Ruthie Hubbard; special nephew, Robby McIlwain; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethel AME Zion Church, The Kannapolis African American Museum and Cultural Center, Inc. (KAA_MaCC) or Cabarrus County Hospice.
