Deborah Bowman was born on June 24, 1950 to William and Virginia Bowman in New York City’s East Harlem. She was the eldest of seven children.
Deborah exhibited artistic ability at a young age and was mentored by an artist who was an art teacher. She was accepted into the specialized High School of Art & Design in New York City. Upon graduation she worked as an artist for the Carol Klein Company. In 1969 her love for children led her to work as an Assistant Teacher at James Weldon Johnson Head Start Center, NYC where she worked for over 13 years. This employment was followed by various nonprofit agencies which include M. L. Wilson Boys Club, Boys Harbor, United Bronx Parents, Inc. and La Casita where she worked as a Family Caseworker counseling homeless women and children.
She attended the New York University Urban Leadership Development Program for Early Childhood Education in 1970 where she developed a love for education and an eagerness to learn. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education and Psychology from Pace University in 1978 and in1982 she earned a Bachelors in Social Work from Adelphi University. In 1988 Deborah earned her Masters of Divinity from New York Theological Seminary.
Deborah was a lover of music and art. She also loved to read and conduct research on world history, religion and culture. Deborah was a community activist and strived to elevate her community. She attended various workshops, seminars and classes for personal development and other interests throughout her life. For many years she enjoyed going to events held at the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute.
Deborah had a strong sense of family. She loved her family and took great pride in being the eldest. Each and every child in the family brought her joy. She lovingly referred to them as her children and they held a special place in her heart.
On Sunday, April 19, 2020, at 1:28 am, our beloved Deborah Bowman transitioned from this life at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, New York.
Deborah is survived by her mother Virginia Bowman (Huntersville, NC), siblings: Carolyn Shaw (Manning, SC) Eric (Tessa) Bowman (Staten Island, NY), Elaine (Ken) Acquah (Bronx, NY), Anthony (Laura) Bowman (Manning, SC), Vivian (Harold) Morrow (Summerton, SC) and Deanna (Rock) Little (Huntersville, NC). In addition, her “children” (nieces and nephews): Anton & Keisha, Shawn (Lynn) & Kayla, Tony Jr., Tariq, Khephra, Courtney, Harold Jr., & Zoe, Kelly & Kenny, and grandnephews Joshua, Chris & Shawn Jr., Anton Jr., Kyler, grandnieces, Madison and Isadora and a host of family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, William Bowman and nephew Curtis Shaw.
